Most pressure washers use either axial cam pumps or triplex plunger pumps. Axial pumps are compact and commonly found on residential machines. They are designed for occasional use, require minimal maintenance, and are well suited for light-duty cleaning tasks. Triplex pumps, on the other hand, are built for higher efficiency and durability. They are typically used in commercial and professional-grade pressure washers, where frequent operation and serviceability are required. At the end of the system, interchangeable spray nozzles regulate the shape and intensity of the water stream. These nozzles, usually attached via a 1/4-inch quick-connect fitting, control how concentrated the pressure is at the surface. Narrow spray patterns deliver higher impact for heavy buildup, while wider patterns distribute force more gently for sensitive materials.
